Temperature pegged, power steering went out. Fan running in stopped engine?
So, this is the first time I've had a non-gremlin issue with my Saab.
Coming home from a local park about 15 miles away and the temperature pegged, the dash beeped and showed the triangle and battery icons, and the power steering seemed to fail. The car ran fine and got us home without issue -- other than the 2-3 manual L/R turns and pegged engine temp.
Got home fine, turned car off and a fan sounded like it was running in the engine compartment. Looked like some fluid splashed from the driver's side onto the battery cover area (power steering fluid?). Unloaded everyone and am just about to go back out to see what the situation is. No codes on dash or SID alerts while driving home, will check codes via my bluetooth odb2 reader.
Overall, there have been no real issues with the car. I change the oil regularly, etc. It's driven rarely now as we got another car for commuting, etc. but we still use it for short errands. Most recent fix was terminating the neutral safety switch.
Anyone have any ideas where I should start looking? How would the power steering unit and pegged engine temp be related? What am I looking at here? Will I be parting ways with my buddy Yngwie?2001 9-5 Wagon

Are you sure you didn’t lose the serpentine belt?

Would the car still operate without the serpentine belt? I didn't see or hear anything unusual, and the car ran fine on the way home. I also just started it up, and it was running a bit rough so I turned it off and got some data from the reader. No codes.
However, the SID popped up a message that I need to add engine coolant, and there was nothing in the reservoir. So something with the cooling system? I've been meaning to do a flush and fill before summer, but the levels seemed good. In this event, it seemed to just squirt h20/coolant around and into the battery. There was liquid inside the battery cover on the posts, etc. Would the battery light come on as well in this case?
I'm going to fill it up with coolant and take it to my indy saab shop first thing, but I would like to know what I'm dealing with.
EDIT: The saab indy is literally down at the end of the street, so only a block away and I hope it is safe to drive it in there once I add coolant.Last edited by AT ONE SIR; 11 March 2018 at 23:57. Reason: saab wrench is very close.

Yes, the car can still run without the serpentine belt but the power steering pump wont pump, the battery won't charge and it won't take you long to overheat.

Thanks Digger. I went out with the other car to buy about 10 gal of distill h2o and a gallon of zerex g-05.
I looked at where the belt is and it was snapped clean and just sticking up proud. It had been squeaking in the morning and I was planning on replacing it anyway, but put it off. I topped off with distilled water to cold max and am getting the belt replaced at the indy saab which is a block away.
I can't believe I never looked at the belt. I guess I am lucky to have never had this happen before with the saab, and I am very grateful I made it home.Last edited by AT ONE SIR; 12 March 2018 at 04:06. Reason: color of coolant not germain

Depending on the mileage of your 9-5, it is a good idea to replace the idler and tensioning pulleys as well. Perhaps faulty pulleys were the cause of the belt coming off.

Thanks Frank. I asked my shop to do just that. I'm lucky to have one of the few indy Saab shops right down the street. It's helped me keep Yngwie tip top @ 130k.

All seems well and the car runs fine after the repair but I got a code for P0304 Cylinder Misfire for the first time ever. I cleared the code and am going to change the plugs again I guess? I change them very frequently based on time and not mileage.
I don't put many miles on the car and I am wondering what some of the potential side effects of an engine overheat might be. The engine overheated when the serpentine belt went and I had to add distilled h20.2001 9-5 Wagon

As most overheats occur when immediately shutting off the engine isn't safe and getting off the road easy, the two most common side affects of overheating are cooking a head gasket and warping a head.
