The better stocked your tool box is the easier the job is. Vac the system down and check for leaks before opening the lines if you can before replacing could save some time and money in the long run, but not a necessity. New seals cost less than loosing a Freon charge and should be done anytime you open a line. If you find your old oil is metal gritty from a failed compressor, plan on flushing the system and replacing filter and dryer.
