I was kind of hoping when I clicked on this that "optional sound system for sport combi" would lead to instructions on how to rip this entire irritating, interconnected, infotainment system out of the car and replace it with anything else, without killing the car in the process.
Oh well, the big screen on my radio with a dozen buttons that do nothing still does a good job of holding post it notes.

The fiber-optic based entertainment and other systems in the 03-06 9-3 is pretty cool on paper and probably ahead of its time. According to rumors, Saab spent a lot of time and money on this system against the wishes of GM to supply a more traditional system. Still very cool but a nightmare to replace with an aftermarket audio system.

In the GM line this infotainment system isn't a new idea, it's not even cutting edge. Back in the late 80's touch screen infotainment was standard equipment in the Buick Riviera and Reatta, The Saab design with fiber token ring and interconnected hard wire star topography used newer components engineered and time tested in hostile environment and extreme climate is the great improvement. The 9-3 has the capability to provide more information and diagnostic ability than the 1988 Buick system, without the original system glitches. These Buick owners don't need the GM scan tool to find a bad sensor, they have diagnostic readings and testing built into the dash. Great for the owner, not so great for the dealer service department. All of this diagnostic capability and more is built into the 03-06 Saab 9-3. What GM didn't let Saab do was give owners access to this information as I assume Saab had more in mind for the LCD on the control head than displaying the word radio. Surfing the internet I found that some enterprising Saab owner cracked the Trionic 7 code to allow owners access to the system and eventually someone will crack the Trionic 8 giving owners fingertip access to operational data as if displayed by a scan tool.

Having read the owners manual before I bought my Saab, I knew not to expect the same user infotainment function of a 1988 Buick Reatta, but I did expect the phone function of a 1990 Olds Toronado https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY4zPRr5_ug and it was a real disappointment to learn that GM sold this system in the US where everything that makes it worth having can't be used. Darned aggravating to look through the car and find that I need to re engineer the entire system to use the hands free capability built into the car, or get the name of the artist singing a song off the top of the dash where it displays as if it were vital operational information.
