Water pouring out the overflow exspansion bottle
2003 Vector vert 106k
After the car started over heating
Water would pour back into the exspansion bottle 60% of the engines coolant is lost
I thought the head gasket had gone
Jobs i have carried out
Replaced the thermo stat
Checked the Fan..ok
Replaced the head gasket
Oil and filter
I drove 35 miles test drive yesterday
Stopping every 10 miles to check all was ok
Various speeds 50-70mph
All was ok
I returned home lifted the bonnet
Engine was ticking over
Then the water under great pressure started to blow back into the exspansion bottle
And out the overflow
I turned the engine off
It continued to pour out the overflow at an alarming rate dumping 60% of the new coolant on to the road
No idea what to do now
I replaced the cap and cleaned out the exspansion tank
The cooling system was carefully filled through the top hose and exspansion tank
The lack of water on a motorway caused the head gasket to blow.. the head was removed and skimed flat
Its a massive job i am so dissapointed the problem is still there
I have heard mentioned reverse flow of the turbo water way due to the engine breather..?
Can any one please exsplain
Thank you peeps. I‘m sure others must have had the same problem
How do i fix this!! Just spent £600!
Phil

Adding the engine size is always a good thing to do when asking an engine question, but what you have here sounds more like a cooling system question and my question to you is: Does your radiator fan work?

Morning Digger
nice of you to Reply 2.0L
yes the fan is working, However no way to tell ?
if its working all the Time or coming on when it should
the problem lies in reverse flow..?
i read on another thread when the turbo is
hot it can some how reverse the flow as
the top pipe from the exspansion bottle
goes directly to the turbo it makes some sence
the blow back of coolant certainly comes
from the turbo pipe

Hi the stat can only go in one way
the problem lies i think in the turbo reverse flow
pressure from the turbo is charging the water system
maybe the cast iron is cracked..?
it only does it when the car has driven hard
and the boost is used at pressure..?
is there a pressure realise or dump valve on
the turbo..?

Fan coming on is one thing, fan moving enough air to carry Dorothy and Todo from Kansas to OZ is a horse of a different color. I know this type of turbo car problem and it's not Saab specific. There are several causes beyond the cooling fan, but checking to see if the fan blows air volume needed is fairly easy.
Turning on the AC should get a fan spinning full time while driving and if that stops the overflow you look to the circuit that controls the cooling fans.
The turbo does have a waste gate and that can cause problems, but we don't have intercoolers so the cause you're questioning is highly unlikely. You can test the coolant for compression gas and if the head was magna fluxed when it was milled, the most likely place to find this would again be the head gasket and I have to ask if the head bolts were replaced with the gasket?

Hi Digger
I am Happy the head gasket is fine now
new bolts. head Skimmed torked down
3 stages final with an Angle gauge
getting a bit off topic here
when the engine is switched off
the fan runs as it should
the coolant blow back is coming from
the top pipe. Which goes to the Turbo
what do you call the cast iron union
with the water inlet and return .and oil feed pipes ?. between the
turbo and cat..?
this seems a common problem i have seen a few
threades about it I‘m hopeing that a mechanic who has
an answer will pop up
it only dumps the engine coolant
when its switched off after a hard run
drove 130 miles gently no probs or coolant
loss temp is fine heater works
engine is running sweet ..?
How fragile is the return coolant pipe
from the turbo to engine.. it runs right under the manifold
i read thats its lined with porcelain and can be obstructive.?
what i‘m trying to do now is avoid further exspensive trial
and error exsperiments
