How to: 3 Check Engine lights : Ignition Coil Knock,1-4;Camshaft Position Sensor

Hey Saab folks! I have a fine 2001 SAAB 9-5 wagon, 2.3t engine, but she can't pass our NYS inspection,in part because of 3 check engine problems:

PO340 Camshaft Position Sensor A, Bank 1 Circuit Malfunctiion

P1312 Ignition Coil Knock detection, Cylinders 1 and 2.
P1334 Ignition coil knock detection, Cylinders 3 and 4.

I am unclear if my friend and mechanic John can fix them; Have any of you all worked on any of these problems, and remember what you did? The Saaby is running well, maybe the MPG could be a little better, but she has power and sounds smooth.

    Any ideas?

P1312 and P1334 are classic signs of a DIC and spark plugs that need to be replaced.

i never had CPS problems before but I sounds like replacing the CPS is needed as well.

While the DIC is a bit pricey, the good news is that it is easy to replace yourself.

Many threads about these error codes already: https://www.google.com/search?q=P131...Asaabworld.net

Make sure to use the correct NGK plugs for your engine.

Speaking with my "I get paid to fix cars" hat on -- I'd replace the spark plugs and clear the codes, then see what comes back -- there's a good chance you'll be in the clear. Saab is unique in using a resistance measurement through the coils to detect misfire. This makes Trionic very sensitive to spark plug condition. Trionic is also infamous for piggyback codes. The CPS code may be a complete ghost.

EDIT: I should say, Saab was a pioneer in using resistance measured through the coils to detect misfire. It's more common now, but in the early days of OBDII, block mounted knock sensors were the common method.

PO340 Camshaft Position Sensor A, Bank 1 Circuit Malfunctiion is tied with coil pack failure when you've changed the pack this error will be vanishing...
