    1964 Saab 96

Bought a 64 Saab 96 over the weekend...

Over the weekend I bought a mostly complete non-running 64 96. After some tinkering and using one of my XT600 motorcycle fuel tanks to gravity feed the carb, I got it to spit and sputter to life!!! I couldn't find reverse so we had to push it out of the yard backwards and I drove it to the end of the street an back. It didn't run well, as expect for a car that has been sitting since 1976... I started tearing down the motor and #2 piston is melted, I've read this is common? I have since pull the motor out split the case and pulled off the number two piston. I dropped the block and head off at the machine shop to get clean up this morning. I've been looking for a replacement piston BUT here's my issue... everything I am reading states that the bore should be 70mm but what I am measuring is 66.75mm. What do I have and who has a piston??? I'm already in love with this little car!

I can't help you with your specific question about the bore and piston size but would like to hear and see more about this vintage Saab.

Hi Donny, much like other members here, I can't help you with the bore size question, which from what I thought was neither 70mm nor 66mm, however, I added a link below of a site where the guy restored a 1964 Saab 96 and has "project posts" you can click on to view specific topic of the restoration. If nothing else, maybe you can get some good reference photos from his site, which might tell you how something is supposed to go.

I've found that information (and parts) are very few and far between on these old 96s. I have a 1969 and even that one is hard to find parts for.

Good luck and I hope this helps!
