2002 saab 9-5 v6 arc

Code p1640 I was driving last week and stalled while at a stop light.. I checked codes today and got p1640... checked fuel pump checked all main relays.. when I try to start all I get is a winning noise from starter like it's not engaging HELP PLEASE MY RIDE TO WORK IS NOT STARTING 165K MILES I NEED HELP ASAP I HAVE CASH IN HAND IF ANYONE IS CLOSE BY WATERBURY CT TO HELP GET IT RUNNING

The 9-5 has a permanent magnet starter with the solenoid built in, the theory is that the starter won't turn unless it is engaged. If it is turning but not engaged the pinion may be damaged or the fork on the solenoid is bent/broken. I suggest that you need to start by removing the starter motor. Sorry, it is a beast of a job unless you can lift the car for access.

Thanks for the reply I've done alot of searching for this 1640 code and trying to figure out where I'm getting low to no power at exactly... p1640 is coming up for no voltage on pin 1 to ecu.... easy to understand but not easy to find.. I have found a connection in front of the fire wall when I disconnected it I found alot of dirt cleaned it up (blowing on it and with a dry rag) but no start same whinning noise from starter... I'll have to wait on a starter money kinda low but I'll keep searching and reading forums and will keep updating. I also hope more ppl comment on this I need diff opinions I work very well off others ideas btw

So what was the culprit for your problem? This is my exact car, I’ve had the same problems. Just purchased a OBD2 scanner and got the code p1640.

I ended up buying an 03 and kept CHOOSEY parked then just tore her down for parts to keep handy for the 03 but 1 thing i do know for sure if you getting the whinning noise the starter is gone
