    2005 Saab 9-5 Aero

    Angry At my wits end with my 2005 9-5 aero's fuel economy.

    After hearing several other suggestions on how to increase my mpg a common one was the DIC, I had a crappy Pro-Parts one and the CEL came on so I went and brought a brand new Saab OEM DIC, this did not change my mpg whatsoever, I am still getting 13-15 mixed. So far I have cleaned the MAF and Throttle body, changed spark plugs (NGK 6290), changed fuel filter, new air filter, new oil (0W-40), good gas, Fuel injector/fuel system additives and brand new Good Year Eagle Sports. I'm a high school student and gas is very expensive near me so there are days I walk to school just to save gas so any suggestions at this point will help, one of many reasons I bought this car was so I could have a performance saloon and still not break the bank of gas but so far that's not happening.

    Fuel pump. Bout 150 shipped with assembly and it comes with a new pump from Eeuroparts, or try FCP Euro as well, they have an awesome warranty. If you ever plan on tuning it, nows the time to grab an upgraded one and wire it in.

    Install is easy since you don't have to drop the tank in your model year. Pull up the back seat and watch a YouTube video

    One more thing, everything else you did was very thorough! Maybe someone else can chime in?

    @Digger?

    You could take it to a Saab service centre and have them diagnose. Perhaps it is something that is easy to find with Tech2. It may be less expensive than keep on guessing what it may be and throwing money and parts at it.

    Do you use the SID for checking the mpg numbers or do manual calculations of fuel used vs miles driven?

    I do the math myself when refueling and it's usually the same as the SID. I talked to my Saab mechanic and he said he would see what the sensors were reading with a tech 2.

    Cleaning a MAF can solve a lot of problems except for a bad MAF and if you don't have a scan tool that will show sensor values you don't know if the MAF was, or is working correctly. It only takes one screwy sensor to screw up your gas mileage, or worse, keep your engine from running.

    Sometimes the shotgun method works and sometimes it's best to go with the pro, especially when you are fighting sensors. Having test equipment and learning how to use it takes time, so go to the pro and learn as much as you can from the experience. The visit will probably cost you a couple of hundred, the education you can get from this one problem could save you thousands by the time you're old enough to retire.
