noticable ticking noise under bonnet

i have the 9-3 2.2 TiD and today it seems to sound more clattery with a distintive ticking noise on idle that goes away when revved or driving but it also has a low rythmic hum and it seems to be on the left of the engine as you look at it (im sure its coming from engine), does it sound like a serious problem also it seems like its driving fine and oil level is at maximum but fuel guage seems to be going down quicker i think

Ok I gave car an oil and filter change and thought that solved it but no, when cold next day the ticking was there and if left to idle it continues but if you take car for a mile or do drive it quietens right down or stops until restarted and ticking comes back but quieter when warm also there is no running issues from engine it feels fine

Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope and start looking for the sound, you can put the handle of a long screwdriver to your ear and do the same thing, but I think the proper tool is better and oftentimes safer. The odd ticking that I chased for months turned out to be my power steering pump and it took months to find because it wouldn't happen when I was able to search for it.

Mine was lower crank pulley but there is a rubbing noise that comes and goes kinda sounds like plastic arch liner vibrating but none loose and if I turn steering it does it but if I increase revs slightly or when driving there is no noise so I'm thinking bearing in power steering pump pulley
