You don't need to carve a special piece of wood, and long screwdriver will do just as well. Put the tip on what you want to listen to and press the handle to your ear and you have a stethoscope.

I happened to have a scrap that was roughly 1 inch by 3/4 inch and about 2 or 3 feet long. But anything will work. The noise vibration will travel along whatever you use. Long screwdriver, scrap of wood, scrap piece of conduit. Whatever you got handy.

Yesterday I just started tearing the thing apart looking for a leak in the intake where I could hear hissing. The intake manifold gasket was completely gone around cylinder 4! I don't know why, maybe got eaten away by coolant from my leaky heater core valve? Anyway, I have a new gasket and will install tomorrow. Then I guess I'll check the valves for a bunch of shrapnel once I've got everything else back together.
