Huge white smoke cloud after turbo replacement
So my car (9-5, 2.3t 2001 - 185hp) broke down recently. I was cruising on the highway when suddenly there was a loud knock. After that i didn't really have any power anymore. A few seconds later i tried to go on the gas a little again and there was a HUGE white smoke cloud coming from the exhaust. After that I pulled over and the engine was hardly keeping idle and completely stopped after a few more seconds.
I got the car home and replaced the turbo - while replacing the turbo it was clear the turbo got fried. There were loose parts inside the air intake and the turbine was totally loose.
After I replaced the turbo and started the car idle was running smooth again. Engine stayed on no problem but there was still a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust. After a minute or two running in idle the smoke was almost completely gone.
I then tried to drive it around the block. As soon as i got on the gas in second gear there was the huge white smoke cloud again. In that moment the engine was almost stopping again after i got off of the gas it started running smooth again and idle was pretty much perfect.
Right now I'm trying to figure out what else could be wrong with the car. My thought right now is the headgasket.
Do you guys have any thoughts on this? do you think it's the headgasket or could it be something else?
I always thought a broken headgasket is a problem which does not just appear from one second to another i always thought its a process over a longer time. I did not notice any white smoke before the car broke down.
Thanks for any help

Is the white smoke, smoke or steam?
If it’s steam there could be coolant in the intercooler.

Thanks for the replies.
I would say it's actual smoke its very thick not like steam. But maybe its a mixture there was a little bit of water in the exhaust after i swapped the turbo and drove it.
