High level brake light

I have the usual problem of a failed high level brake light and was wondering has anybody repaired one themselves rather than use the expensive kit available online. I am not a sparky but am prepared to do soldering of new LEDs etc.

Took the car for MOT and noticed the high level brake light was working when the tester drove it onto the ramp! Another Saab gremlin?

I have a parking lot on a BMW that illuminates when the headlights are off, probably to make the car look better. There is a failure light but a few weeks later, the light is functional for a few days. This is probably because the filament touched again but it won't last more than a few days of off and on. I have a new bulb ready.
