Preventive repairs / common failed parts and other problems
There are a few things that fail on all 9-5s eventually. I would like to start a list with parts and mileage/time these usually fail. Symptoms of a part that failed/is about to fail is helpful as well. Please add to the thread and I'll update this first post.
Coolant by-pass valve - 100K miles/160K kms
This valve is between the engine and firewall and supplies coolant to the cabin heater system. The plastic housing of these valves can crack and the engine will start to loose coolant. This valve is right above the exhaust on the 2.3 engine and you may notice a strong burnt coolant smell. It can start to leak slowly but also can fail quickly, resulting in a loss of engine coolant leaving you stranded on the side of the road. It's an inexpensive part (under $50) so it is best to replace it before it fails.

Direct Ignition Cassette - 80K-100K miles - random
These seem to fail anywhere between 60K and 100K miles. Problems with the DIC can start with a CEL (Check Engine Light) and the engine will still run fine. A failed DIC can also suddenly leave you stranded so it is a good idea to at least have a spare when you have a 9-5 with higher miles.

I have a 2002 9-3. I noticed the info display suddenly came on with "low coolant" or something like that. I filled up and thought that was it. A day later the same thing. I started reading online and my heart sank.
Long story short, I checked the coolant bypass valve and sure enough that is the problem. Luckily, on the 2002 9-3 the valve is so easy to change so I will go hunt for 1 in the mornin.
Thank you to this fantastic site and all who contribute to it. Without you, I would have been led around a tree by the stealership. Thank you from Cape Town.

Fuel pump:
on my 99 9-5 SE V6, it failed around 175k kms. on my 2005 9-5 it's around 120k kms and I am having to replace it because it's getting weaker. that was diagnosed as source of my early morning startup troubles. not sure if others have similar experience or not.

I have installed the MacKay hose from EEUroparts in place of the bi-pass valve. the hose is only $30. and you never have to mess with the bi-pass again. Have seen no difference in coldness of the A/C

This is to Franks' comment in reference to the DI cassett and having a spare. I have a spare, the light will still come on but it will work great if you are stuck on the side of the road. It is off a 9-5, 20003. I will part with it for $25 plus shipping of $5.00 in the States. I live in the Las Vegas area, so if one lives there, just drive over. Please post in the Marketplace: Classifieds
You'll get more exposure there anyways as it will show up in the recent ads on the main forum page.
Thanks!
