I just got a check for 2 cents! Somehow, I was included in a class action lawsuit against ebay. Class action lawsuits can result in the lawyers getting a lot of money since they bill by the hour. I am debating whether to keep the check and letter as a gag, frame it, or cash the check.

Doesn't it cost more than $0.02 in energy and labor cost to cash a check. Not to mention the cost to produce the check, paper cost and so on.

I had something similar happen a few years ago. Got a check for 18 cents. I took it to my bank and they laughed, credited my account and shredded the check!
I got an email a couple days ago that I'm a litigant in a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster. That should be a big payout.

This also happened to me! It's an old lawyer trick in the US...you will get an unsolicited letter in the mail saying that there's this huge class action lawsuit for anyone who bought a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee (as an example, this one allowed you to get in on the class action suit as well as get your pads/disks/calipers replaced if you were within 75kmiles when you needed to replace your pads and any other part (including brake lines in some models). THE CATCH IS that for the CLASS ACTION part of the letter, they say pretty much "if you DO NOT want to be a part of this class action suit, please fill out the enclosed documentation (like an hour worth of paperwork) and we will take your name off of the suit, otherwise Dongle, Pecker, and Stroker, esq. Partners will include your name". The catch is they KNOW no one will fill out the paper work and that gives them the RIGHT to represent you in the suit. When ALL lawyer fees are paid, when every penny is collected for the costs of filing the suit and sending half of America the letter, etc, etc, then they issue a check split-up between a all the people (our check was for $.13)! The ENTIRE law firm got RICH charging $500/hour each to the class action suit that took 5 years fighting in the courts (which they slowed up to make more billable hours).
I WISH they would do a class action lawsuit against Mobil-1 and Saabaru 9-2x Aero engines for blowing up....HAHAHAHAA!!!! Even after the lawyers took their cut I would be one out only a few hundred to split the remaining cash with and probably get $10,000! HAAA!!!

I now go out of my way to OPT-OUT of ANY class-action lawsuit...the less people that are "represented" the less $ the lawyers can claim, the more work they need to do to opt me out, etc, etc!
And if there is ever one I miss an opt-out of (or it's way too much trouble to opt-opt) and I get a check, I ALWAYS cash it...it costs them WAY more than 2-cents to account for the cashed check, and if everyone cashed the check there wouldn't be $500,000 left in the bucket for the lawyers to split-up and keep on-top of what they already made from the suit!

Invited to what? Did you get this e-mail? It had an attachment. I didn't want to open the e-mail up for fear of spam. I am suspicious because the name of the sender is "Saab CarsNA", not "Saab Cars NA".
