Search engine optimization
I am adding vBSEO to the site. http://www.vbseo.com/
I am still learning about all the options and settings and it can be pretty complex. One of the things that will change is the URL format. Hopefully, the change-over will be pretty transparent but there may be some error messages at times. Please report anything that isn't working correctly.

So it optimizes the URLs used so it's easier for search engines to pick them up?

Yes, that's the basic explanation and main goal. But there is a lot more to it as well.

I am having a hard time deciding what URL format to use.
with model name in path
saabworld.net/saab-9-3-workshop/replacing-alternator-12345
with forum ID in path
saabworld.net/f34/replacing-alternator-12345
The first one will be better for the search engines but it also means forum names can never change. And I am having a hard time figuring out the correct model naming convention.

Well, you can change the name on the forum here but it means you would loose the links in the search engines and start from the beginning again.
saabworld.net/saab-9-3-workshop/replacing-alternator-12345 would be a broken link if it changes to saabworld.net/saab-9-3-Gen2-workshop/replacing-alternator-12345
It's not that big of a deal not being able to change the forum names, except for mid-model naming changes like the NG900/9-3.
