As the back of the main unit was totally different then the ones i have seen here i didnt understand which cable is which and i took my car to a audio center here in Utrecht (Netherlands). By luck there was a really nice and willing to help guy. It took him to finish it almost 6 hours.
The most strange thing was when he removed the head unit from the dash the radio or CD changer was still working and voice was on the speakers. In a way the unit was just a screen itself. All the main units (radio/Cd changer/ navigation system) was installed back in the trunk.
There is 2 amplifiers in the car one is in the right side of the right front foot place and the second one is under the rear right seat. So he checked all the cables one by one and first in order to understand which is which. And then he used 2 packs of ready cables by small cuttings and bypasses. Of course for now the steering wheel controls are not working.
And then everything was OK at the end. Now the system is using the 2 amplifiers and 9 HK speakers from the factory. The sound is really amazing. It was a bit stresfull waiting but now it worth.
The only thing is the finishing . part is not so good now. It is bit inside the front panel but we will fix it in couple of days.
Both the Android Auto and the Apple Car Play is working perfectly fine.

So don't believe them who says it is not possible to replace the original head unit even on the 2003 SAAB 9-5 (ARC) 3.0L with Kenwood Navigation system.

I will post the photos tomorrow.
Here are the photos of the installation...

    2000 9-5 Gary fisher
After 8 years this thread is still very useful. I just installed a older Pyle android based 2din in my Gary fisher. With the exception of the dash cam and back up cam I followed alost every step. I was able to use the tabs on the radio basket to hold the face flush with the dash. My only issue was programming the steering wheel controls. It took a lot longer then I expected.

Working on on the gap between the bezel and dash right now. The largest bezel that came with the radio was 7 1/2 inches while the dash opening is 7 3/4inches. Kinda minor but it bugs the hell out of me Lol.

I have seen that faceplate before but thought it never was actually produced. I am very curious to see and hear how it installs and looks with a 2DIN head unit. $75 is very reasonable.

Good luck with the install and welcome to SaabWorld.

    9-5 Aero
It's amazing that this thread is still going after all this time!

A little background: I have a kind of unique situation maybe I can get some help? I have a 2001 9-5 Aero that I bought from a buddy of mine. He had already updated the radio some time ago with a SONY XVA-60 to which he added an external HD radio box and a backup camera. I have asked him about some of these things but I hate to be a pest, and he doesn't remember everything he did, either.

I am trying to upgrade using an Pioneer AVH 501 to get bluetooth and phone.

I can't seem to understand where the connector for the PAC audio Steering Wheel Controls is supposed to connect to? It's not clear from any pictures I could find.
I found a harness to use the mic that's already installed from On Star on another forum. I cannot seem to figure out where that's connected either?

A side note: the backlight one of the seat heater switches is out. Any know if there is a replacement LED for that?

For the ones using the Axxess ASWC-1 on Pioneer units

    Hello,
I finally decided to upgrade my 1999 Saab 9-5 with the 7 speaker system. I have the Pioneer app unit SPH-DA120 and the Axxess for the steering wheel control.
I am having problems programming it. Before I install it, I upgraded the firmware and select the Pioneer unit as the radio, using the Axxess software. I connect the white/green wire from the Axxess to the blue/white wire from the SID.
I cannot get it to program the buttons. was the programming automatic or do I need to do the manual? Do I need to use a resistor to get it to work? If so, on what cables and where? If not, any ideas on how to successfully complete the programming? Also, since I am more into apple car play, has anyone programmed the source button on the steering wheel to call Siri?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

He has a Facebook page. If you message him he will put you on the list and message you when he puts them on eBay for purchase. he also links this thread in his installation FAQ.

Anyone willing to help me understand whats needed for a head unit install?

    Hey Everyone

I've been racking the forums and websites to try to find a clear idiots guide on installing a new headunit into a saab 95 2004 estate, but its become clear that idiots shouldn't be installing these!

There is some amount of wiring needed and soldering/connecting to ignition points and connecting steering adapters, amp cables etc that i'm just too unintelligent and inexperienced to work out!

Is there anyone who might have some spare time to assist with advising me what is needed to install a single DIN headunit into my glove box or may know of a good garage/audio specialist in the uk that wont rip me off?

Thanks and i really appreciate any help!

This guide seems to be quite popular but not sure if it is idiot proof.

Not sure how many hours a professional installer would need but I am guessing 4 hours would be a good start + parts.

Thanks Nord, so just to expel all my stupid questions

To do somthing similar but more simple to the thread linked describes i could just procure:
    • any headunit with 2 pairs of RCA pre out. (any other requirements i need to think about with headunit?)
    • Metra 70-1786 adapter (does it matter some website say its for a land rover/Mercedes?)
    • Aerial adapter
    • Din facia/cage if i dont want to use the old one?

I dont really need the steering wheel adapter i can add this in later if required?

Sorry one last question someone said i should also buy some ground loop isolators if using the existing amp? Which i guess is just THIS

    Thanks
