Looks to me that the rotor does not line up with contacts in the cap which would produce the results you see. I think the rotor is riding too low in the distributor body somehow and the spark is having to jump too far. Or the cap is not seated down on the dizzy properly. Check the distances of rotor height and measurement in cap. Maybe the dizzy has been assembled wrongly or with wrong parts.

    Paul,

I believe the cap hits the crossbar on the hood hinge knocking the cap out of alignment. Threepwood originally had a hydraulic mount and I swapped transmissions and converted to solid. I am not sure but I think the motor may ride higher this way.

You didn't happen to install the front engine mount upside down, did you? My indie accidentally installed a replacement upside down in my 85, years ago, which ate a few caps and rotors. The metal loop should be beneath, not above. Just a thought.

This is a shot of the front mount. Do not see how it could be upside down? A bolt goes through it and it sits in the body mount.
The car initially had a transmission with a Hydraulic front mount.
I was wondering if the center lines were different between the two mount styles.

That is the solid mount. The way up does not matter. The hydraulic mount has a strap over the top to prevent the engine lifting. How that can be fitted the wrong way I have yet to imagine.

I had to acquire an adapter for the chassis to accept the solid mount It bolts in place and is held down by 2 bolts with spacers between the bolt head and the bracket. Don't see how that could be lowered either.

I wasn't clear, sorry, but the bracket between the engine mount and body can be installed upside down, which would tilt the engine up slightly- just enough for the distributor to contact the hood.

There's a picture of mine, which is broken, but installed properly. Indie bolted the replacement in upside down. 'know what I mean now? : )

A picture is worth 1000 words. Pretty sure mine is installed that way.

Hmm interesting stuff, I'll figure this out. I want it sorted before I do any long trips with it and I noticed that it's already eating a new rotor up so I'll get to the bottom of it soon. I haven't done anything other than some short trips around the back roads. I am in the midst of a engine swap on a friends 9-5 which is sooo much fun! (sarcasm) I was contemplating parking Threepwood for the winter after I oil undercoated him as to spare him from a harsh VT winter. They dump ridiculous amounts of salt on the roads here! I can actually see rust forming on my winter beater 9-5 that was a farely rust free car a year ago and now the doglegs have holes in them! I know Threepwoods not perfect but he has tons more life in him and I don't think a VT winter would do him any favors....
