My suggestion is fix what you got/upgrade to factory premium stuff or buy a MY07+ I wouldn't mess with that system unless you are highly skilled in electronics.

Do you want to replace it with the same Saab head unit / CD player or do you want to install an aftermarket head unit? If aftermarket, it is possible but it is really difficult as Burnsside mentioned. I think the main issues are the fiber optics and the fact you need to keep the original head unit connected for other car electronics to work.

Here are more details on the audio system: http://saabworld.net/f146/saab-9-3-a...-2006-a-25259/

From what I understand, your best bet is to leave the existing audio head unit in place and install a single-DIN head unit where the CD Player is. Not sure if you have to run new wire to the speakers. My New Indash Sat Nav/DVD System 2003 9-3 Aero Thank You SaabCentral - SaabCentral Forums

    2003 9-3 linear
i have the same model (2003 9-3 linear) what i did and i dont recommend it but it worked for me, take out your stock CD player get a single din deck to fill the hole, I disconnected my fiber optics (FO) from the CD and the main deck you should see a blinking red light on one of the FO cables from the radio unplug the other on, leaving the blinking on in the harness, do the same for the CD player, now take those two cables and your going to need to "loop" the signal, i did it with a big pen and some shrink tube, mate the two cables so the ends are touching, thus completing the "loop" now this is the part i dont recommend, once this is done you will loose your door speakers and the center speaker up on the dash, as well as you HUD (heads up display, center of dash right below windshield) as well as steering wheel controls.. ie. volume and what not, i then cut existing speaker wires that were running into the harness that you got the FO cable from and spliced into those with the new deck. NOW.... the power... I spliced into the ECU power supply to power the deck, again not recommended but it works. im still toying with the idea of looping the FO from amp1, I have been told that this will give me back my HUD, but for me its just a neat info display that i could go with out. Hope that helps, I am running a pioneer deck with pandora and a usb for my ipod everything works and the deck fits nicely in the CD hole, there is a bit of space on either side but for the most part it improved my sound 10 t fold, i have the stock 3.5 speakers in the dash, and some old 6" bose in the back deck, I have routed most of the power.... to the rear till i can upgrade the fronts to a better sound, they really cant handle the bass. good luck
