Lug nut conversion
Hello everyone.
So a few weeks ago I was going to rotate my wheels. I ended up snapping a lug bolt. I went and checked my other bolts only to find out that the one I snapped, had a solid cone and all the other lug bolts had the cones that kind of moved. I am just not a fan of lug bolts since every vehicle I've ever owned has had lug nuts. So, Instead of buying a new lug bolt, I bought BMW racing lug nuts. They're 57mm long. I also picked up a set of long spiked lug nuts. It's a mix between the movies Mad Max and Grease. I'm eventually going to give the car a wider and lower stance.

Interesting position. Saab designed the wheel retention to use bolts for a reason, probably because it significantly reduces the chances of damaging the threads when fitting the wheels. It would appear that the bolt you sheared was not an OEM part and I would strongly advise the use of the correct bolts. I certainly wouldn't advise installing studs and nuts in place of bolts but it is your car and your life. I also very strongly recommend the use of a torque wrench on wheel nuts/bolts.
Why you gentlemen in the USA call them "lug" nuts or bolts is beyond me as there are no lugs in evidence. At least no lugs as an engineer would understand the term (I am an engineer) nor as English slang would understand the term, "lug holes" or "lug 'oles" being slang for ears!
Oh, by the way, the arrangement in your photograph would be illegal in Europe for use on roads, make sure that it is legal where you are before venturing out.

Considering how long we colonials have been calling these things lug nuts and bolts, my best guess at why; Would be that before torque wrenches it was a descriptive as to uniform tension, or lifting pull, by "lugging" the wheel nuts to the weight of the empty caisson or cart.
