Tis the season to get your head bonked by a Saab!
I bought my Saab a holiday gift of a new washer fluid cap, and my hood lifts decided to give out on my head when I tried to put it in place.
Dang, they are heavy...hood and tailgate. Concussion quality!
I saw someone use a tripod to hold his tailgate in place while replacing struts. Doubt it will work for my hood problem, but maybe that would help with your tailgate strut replacement task.

A new strut for your hood should fix your problem, but at 20 below even new struts don't always work as good as they should and a snow brush makes for a good just in case safety stop, or an all purpose year round hood prop.

I use the long handle snow brush for my Jeep in the winter and my machete in the summer to keep the hood propped up. Both work great!

    Actually simple

Just to close the loop on this: I actually had some ordering problems with the first item and these worked just fine: STRUTS

I used an old hockey stick shaft (real wood, not CF ) to hold her up and most of the work was done before I knew it.

My only advice to anyone doing this would be to wear rubber gloves while taking apart the interior stuff, and then put on CLEAN gloves when you are replacing the stuff. I also bought a small kit to take apart the interior without any marks, etc. It worked a treat. PLASTIC TOOLS

Oh, and the thing really DOES fly up once they are both replaced. Be careful if you have little ones about.
