    SAAB FOR 2001: 9-5 SEDAN — DESIGN

SAAB 9-5 SEDAN’S DESIGN MARRIES FORM AND FUNCTION

    • Interior cockpit design puts driver in control
    • Ultimate seat comfort: warm in winter, cool in summer
    • Advanced HVAC system helps keep all passengers comfortable
    • Double air filtration system eliminates most cabin irritants
    • Aerodynamics and vehicle design create quietest Saab ever
    • Advanced Harman/Kardon audio system available

The Saab 9-5 Sedan is first and foremost an immediately identifiable Saab, with all the individuality and character a customer would expect. The front of the Saab 9-5 appears wide and low, with a fully integrated lower spoiler. The grille and headlamps flow together smoothly. From the side, the car’s lines rise slightly to create a wedge-like profile, with rounded and sloping flush-bonded windshield and rear window forms. Side glass is nearly flush with the sheet metal.

The trunk lid is relatively short and high, increasing the interior height of the luggage compartment, and reducing drag by preventing the airflow over the roof from detaching too early from the shape of the car. Extensive wind tunnel development has given the Saab 9-5 a lower drag coefficient than any previous Saab model. The Saab 9-5 Sedan has a Cd of only 0.29, one of the best figures ever recorded for a luxury car.

    Interior Cockpit Design
The interior of the Saab 9-5 is designed to provide superior driver ergonomics. The cabin, and especially the driver's seat, has an evident cockpit feel. The instrument panel is slightly curved around the driver with controls and buttons logically grouped. A direct influence of aircraft ergonomics, the Saab 9-5 is equipped with the Saab Night Panel function in the instrument panel, which turns off potentially distracting lights and instruments at night to improve visibility and then displays information on a need-to-know basis.

The Saab interior design engineers have carefully selected, positioned and tested the various controls so that each is logically placed for a wide variety of 9-5 drivers. For example, the ignition switch is located where Saab engineers feel it is most visible and safest: on the center console between the seats. It takes one smooth and natural motion to fasten the seatbelt, start the engine, disengage the handbrake and select a gear — all on the center console. In the event of a frontal collision, the keys are safely out of the way on the console rather than hanging from the steering column where they can impact the driver’s leg.

Ultimate Seat Comfort: Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer
Saab first introduced electrically heated seats to the auto industry in 1971. The Saab 9-5 continues to offer heated seats as an option, for both the front and rear occupants. The front seat heating systems have three temperature settings independently controlled by a three-position thumbwheel. A switch on the rear of the center console operates rear-seat heating.

A ventilated seat option for the Saab 9-5 is an industry first. Two electric fans in each front seat — one in the seatback and one in the lower cushion — remove the warm, humid air that is normally trapped between the person and the seat. The fans pull the air through perforations in the leather upholstery, through small channels in the padding, and vent it underneath the seat. The fans operate at three driver-selectable speeds for effective full-body ventilation. In addition to obvious comfort advantages, the heated and ventilated seats contribute to safe driving by keeping the driver more comfortable and alert.

Both front seats have a wide range of power adjustments for reach, height and recline, plus an adjustable lumbar pad for optimum back support. The Saab 9-5 SE and Aero models also include three-position memory for the driver’s seat and door mirror settings. This is a much-appreciated feature when more than one person regularly drives the same car.

Advanced Heating, Ventilation and Climate Control
All Saab 9-5 models feature a fully automatic climate control (ACC) that requires only temperature selection for complete climate regulation. Since many drivers like to be slightly cooler or warmer than the passengers, air for the driver’s zone can be up to 9 degrees cooler or warmer than the air for the rest of the cabin.

The ACC features a dedicated microprocessor that assesses the readings from five separate sensors, then optimizes temperature, air distribution, recirculation and fan speed settings to produce the most effective cabin climate. Outside temperature readings are delivered to the controller by the high-speed data bus from the main sensor used for the engine management unit. A second sensor mounted in the roof console measures the cabin temperature. A sun-load sensor on top of the instrument panel measures both the angle and elevation of the sun relative to the car, as well as the sun’s intensity. The processor then calculates how much left/right or upper/lower compensation is needed by the air distribution system to provide the selected cabin temperature balance, using a Saab patented algorithm. Separate left and right outlet temperature sensors close the control loop by checking that the system has produced the desired effect.

Green-tinted heat-absorbent glass is standard, preventing about 50 percent of the sun’s thermal radiation from entering the cabin, reducing the energy required to drive the AC compressor.

A duct from the air conditioning system is fed to the glove compartment to keep drinks chilled or chocolate bars from melting in hot weather. Fully open, the sliding vent can chill the glove compartment to about refrigerator temperature, or 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Double Air Filtration
Saab was the first carmaker to offer a dust and pollen filter for the cabin air in 1978. All Saab cars made since 1990 feature an updated version that uses an electrostatic charge to remove airborne particles down to 4 microns in size — collecting dust, soot and pollen, as well as reducing the greasy haze that can form on the inside of the windshield, impairing visibility, especially at dusk and night.

A second gas and odor-adsorbing filter is standard on the Saab 9-5. It uses an activated charcoal bed that utilizes adsorption to reduce health-impairing substances such as hydrocarbons (benzene, butane, etc.), nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, formaldehyde, and ozone, and to reduce some odor. The filter is particularly effective in reducing irritation of the eyes, mouth, throat and lungs.

    Quietest Saab Ever
The Saab 9-5 Sedan has the lowest interior noise level ever achieved in a Saab car. The excellent aerodynamic properties of the body help reduce potential wind noise. Almost all the unwanted noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) are reduced by the design of the engine and suspension mounts, while the turbocharger helps reduce exhaust noise. Porous sound absorbent pads are applied to the engine compartment bulkhead and hood top to damp out engine-radiated sound.

Particular attention — such as triple door seals — has been given to the upper door frames to minimize road and wind noise transmitted through this area. All door seals are tubular to ensure they are effective regardless of whether there is a slightly positive or negative air pressure difference between the inside and outside of the car.

Premium Audio Systems with Steering Wheel Controls
The Saab 9-5 features a premium system tuned especially for the Saab interior that incorporates a power amplifier with 150 watts of output, played through a total of seven speakers. Supplementary controls for the most frequently used audio functions (volume up/down, audio source, seek and selection of preset stations) are repeated on the steering wheel, within easy thumb-reach. All Saab 9-5’s include an in-dash CD player and integrated cassette tape deck as standard equipment.

All Saab 9-5 SE and Aero Sedan models provide an upgraded Harman/Kardon tuned audio system. With a 240-watt power amplifier and two oval sub-woofer speakers added to the rear parcel shelf for a total of nine speakers, the sound quality is nothing less than superb.

A dual radio antenna integrated into the rear window eliminates the need for an exterior aerial. The antenna has a signal-boosting amplifier that reduces reception difficulties. The radio works together with the antenna amplifier to automatically select the signal from whichever antenna can supply the best reception.

SAAB FOR 2001: 9-5 SEDAN PERFORMANCE

SAAB 9-5 OFFERS TURBOCHARGED POWERPLANTS AND PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED CHASSIS DESIGN

    • Ecopower turbo engines provide excellent horsepower and torque
    • 2.3L 4-cylinder engine now offers 185 hp and broad torque plateau
    • V-6 engine features unique asymmetric turbocharging
    • 9-5 Aero’s high-output turbo offers 230 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque
    • Trionic 7 engine management system enhances performance
    • Chassis design provides precise driving control

The Saab 9-5 Sedan engine range features three different turbocharged engines, all benefiting from more than 20 years of Saab experience in the field of automotive turbocharging. These powerplants provide 9-5 Sedan drivers with spirited turbocharged performance in an efficient, low-emissions package.

    Saab Ecopower Turbo Engines
Three engine variants are available in the Saab 9-5 Sedan — a 2.3L four-cylinder light pressure turbocharged engine that has been enhanced to provide 185 horsepower for 2001; a 3.0L V-6 asymmetrically turbocharged engine (standard on SE models); and a potent 2.3L four-cylinder high-output turbocharged (H.O.T.) engine for the 9-5 Aero. All three engines are members of the Saab Ecopower family — which means they are designed to provide a unique combination of responsive performance, low exhaust emissions and high fuel efficiency.

One of the most noticeable effects of Ecopower technology is the high torque output achieved at low and mid range engine speeds — providing quick acceleration and strong off-the-line response. Saab’s engine philosophy focuses on the force that gets mass moving, a solution that delivers excellent acceleration and passing performance from an efficient, small displacement powerplant.

The 3.0L V-6 is matched with a standard 4-speed automatic transmission, featuring “Sport” and “Winter” shift modes. Both 2.3L four-cylinder Saab 9-5 Sedans come standard with Saab’s 5-speed manual transmission. The 4-speed automatic is available as an option.

Saab’s Traction Control System (TCS) is standard equipment on all 9-5 Sedans. TCS is an “all-speed” system that modulates ABS braking and electronic throttle to optimize traction at the front drive wheels for enhanced control in inclement weather conditions.

    2.3L Ecopower Engine
The Saab 9-5 Sedan’s 2.3L light pressure turbocharged engine uses relatively low boost pressure (maximum boost of about 8.0 psi or 0.55 bar) to deliver boost quickly, providing higher torque at low engine speeds. Strong low-end torque also contributes towards safer passing and more relaxed driving, without needing to frequently rev the engine to high rpm.

The 2.3L engine has been programmed to develop optimum power with a very flat and broad torque curve. The power curve peaks at 5,500 rpm, while the torque curve is actually a torque plateau — a completely straight line from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm. In fact, over 70 percent of the peak torque value is developed from just above the idling speed to the electronically-governed redline at 6,000 rpm.

Saab V-6 Engine Features Asymmetric Turbo
The Saab 9-5 was the first car in the world to be equipped with an asymmetric
turbocharging system. This engine concept uses one turbocharger on the front cylinder bank, driven by exhaust gases from only those three cylinders. The single highly-responsive Garrett GT17 turbocharger delivers compressed air to all six cylinders in both cylinder banks. Combined with a boost pressure that reaches only 3.6 psi (0.25 bar), this technology allows a patented boost control system that eliminates the need for a wastegate.

The advanced 24-valve 3.0L turbo V-6 engine uses a narrow angle of 54 degrees between the cylinder banks. The engine’s strong maximum torque of 229 lb.-ft. at only 2,500 rpm, available all the way up to 4,000 rpm, provides useful performance to reduce passing times and avoid potentially hazardous situations. The high torque also allows longer gearing, which improves fuel economy and reduces engine noise at speed.

    9-5 Aero’s 2.3L High-Output Turbo Engine
The 9-5 Aero features a similar 2.3L high-output turbocharged engine as the 9-3 Viggen. Again, Saab engineers prioritized the engine’s torque output rather than horsepower. The power output of the Saab 9-5 Aero’s engine is primarily attributable to the large, variable boost pressure turbocharger, which produces a maximum boost pressure of 1.4 bar, or 20 psi. This allows the 9-5 Aero to maintain maximum power and torque through nearly all driving conditions — including altitudes approaching 10,000 feet. Saab engineers have designed the engine to withstand the additional stress and heat generated from such high boost levels. Like all Saab turbochargers since 1988, the Aero’s turbo is both oil and water-cooled.

In addition, the engine features reinforced alloy pistons that benefit from oil cooling jets at the base of the block that spray oil at the underside of each piston. The engine also features sturdier connecting rods, nitrided gudgeon pins and strengthened intake valves. To handle the heat, exhaust valves are made of Nimonic alloy — a high nickel content, heat-resistant alloy used in aircraft components subjected to high pressure and temperature, such as the exhaust nozzles in jet engines.

Saab Trionic 7 Engine Management System

All Saab engines feature the latest version of Saab’s Trionic engine management system — Trionic 7. A highly sophisticated system, Trionic 7 utilizes a 32-bit microprocessor capable of two million calculations per second to control Saab’s direct ignition, fuel injection, turbo boost pressure and the electronic “drive-by-wire” throttle to enhance engine response and eliminate turbo lag. It allows all engines to provide low emission levels, high fuel efficiency and adaptable power and torque levels, for flexible and responsive driving characteristics.

Chassis Designed for Precise Driving Control
The Saab 9-5’s chassis has been designed to provide the driver with optimum control at all times — regardless of the driving situation, the load in the car, or external conditions.
The Saab 9-5 Sedan's chassis utilizes isolated front and rear sub-frames to effectively attenuate disturbances and significantly upgrade its driving refinement. MacPherson struts are retained for the front suspension and a multi-link independent suspension is used in the rear. The springs, roll bars and shock absorbers have been calibrated to retain good handling properties and excellent ride comfort. In addition, the power-assisted steering rack is mounted on the rear of the sub-frame to operate with short tie rods and provide very precise wheel control, creating high levels of response and steering feel.

The Saab 9-5 Sedan is equipped with standard front and rear disc brakes and electronically controlled ABS. The ABS system incorporates electronic brake distribution (EBD) and an integrated electronic traction control system (TCS). As with all Saabs, the ABS system is lightweight and compact with four-channel operation triggered by four individual wheel sensors.

EBD comes into effect under hard braking before the ABS is activated. This balances the friction available at each wheel with the braking forces being applied. It automatically provides optimum retardation and the shortest possible stopping distance.

Saab’s Traction Control System (TCS) is standard on all 9-5 models. TCS works in conjunction with the engine management system to prevent the driving wheels from spinning if tire grip is lost. TCS is fully automatic in operation, and is functional at all road speeds, but includes an “off” switch for special circumstances (such as if the driver needs some wheelspin to cut through heavy snow, or when snow chains are fitted). The off-switch will only deactivate the system at low speed (below 40 mph).

    9-5 Aero’s Performance Enhancements
The chassis of the Saab 9-5 Aero has been developed to harmonize with the high-performance turbocharged engine and provide the driver with a highly responsive driving environment. Compared with the chassis of other Saab 9-5 variants, the Aero’s chassis is lower by 10 mm (.4 inch) and firmer. Front and rear suspensions are equipped with heavier anti-roll bars, stiffer springs and harder dampers in order to minimize body roll and improve steering precision, chassis response and driver control.

The Aero’s standard 17-inch light alloy wheels with low profile 225/45 R17 performance tires contribute to the car’s excellent handling characteristics. In addition, the brake system is enhanced to match the performance of the engine. The front brake discs have been increased to 12.1 inches (308mm), compared to 11.3 inches (288 mm) on other 9-5 models.

    SAAB FOR 2001: 9-5 SEDAN — SAFETY

SAAB 9-5 SEDAN PROVIDES REAL-LIFE SAFETY THROUGH STRUCUTURE DESIGN AND NEW TECHNOLOGY

    • Front and rear triple load paths effectively distribute crash energy
    • Side impact protection utilizes pendulum “B” pillar
    • Complete interior safety system complements safety cage
    • Next generation OnStar standard equipment
    • 4-stars in EuroNCAP collision test

Saab engineers have always regarded occupant safety as one of a car’s most important design features. Setting higher safety standards with each new generation Saab, their efforts have culminated in the safety design of the Saab 9-5 — the safest production Saab built to date.

Saab focuses on a Real-life Safety philosophy of designing cars to be as safe as possible in real-world accident situations, rather than just laboratory tests. Since 1972 Saab has investigated more than 5,000 accidents involving Saabs in Sweden. In addition to providing invaluable information regarding the crash safety properties of Saab cars, this data also helps Saab engineers perform more life-like crash tests. The Saab 9-5 has been subjected to more than 40 different crash test configurations, including car-to-car, car-to-truck and car-to-dummy-moose. Of these, only 11 are mandated by government standards.

Front and Rear Triple Load Paths on Each Side
For occupant protection, the front and rear structures of the Saab 9-5 Sedan incorporate three robust load paths on each side of the chassis. Should a collision occur, these paths distribute crash energy over a broad area, thereby lessening the force of the impact on the passenger compartment. Fifty percent of the crash energy is directed through the main chassis member and 25 percent each through two additional load paths. The more load paths that exist between the point of contact and the rigid safety cage behind it, the easier it is to absorb the energy of the impact.

The safety cage itself is an extremely rigid system of steel members that surround the passenger cabin. The parts likely to be subjected to the highest forces are reinforced by thick, high-tensile steel and all joints are carefully designed to resist tearing.

The rear body structure provides an equally high level of crash protection, thanks to reinforcements similar to those in the front. A shield around the fuel filler neck is designed to protect it from breaking away, while the tank itself is in the safest possible place, ahead of the rear axle.

Side Impact Protection Utilizes Pendulum B-Pillar
In the event of a side impact, only very limited deformation zones are available for absorbing the crash energy. The force is absorbed by the side of the car, where the door pillar is made of high-strength steel, and the reinforcements in the sill and door pillar assist in distributing the impact to the safety cage surrounding the interior.

The door pillar of the Saab 9-5 is designed to behave as a pendulum in the event of a side collision. The center section of the “B” pillar is very stiff to prevent the pillar from deforming and intruding into the interior. The top part of the door pillar performs as a “hinge” and retains its position. This system dissipates side-impact crash energy downward, where the human body is stronger and less susceptible to injury. This reduces the risk of injury to the most sensitive parts of the body — the rib cage, head and chest.

    Complete Interior Safety System
Complementing the Saab safety cage and pendulum "B" pillar is a complete interior safety system. The 9-5 Sedan features Saab’s head and torso protecting dual-stage side airbags that are mounted in the outside bolsters of the front seatbacks. The bottom section of the bag inflates first to protect the torso, which is the first part of the occupant's body at risk from
side-impact collision forces. Then the top section of the airbag fully inflates to protect the head.

Additional protection is provided by Saab’s force-reducing front seat-belt and pre-tensioner design. All five seating positions incorporate three-point inertia reel seat belts with semi-automatic height adjustments and anti-submarining ramps to prevent the occupant from sliding under the belt in a severe frontal collision. These seat belts provide gentler restraint of the occupant's forward motion to reduce the risk of belt-induced injuries in collisions.

The Saab 9-5 Sedan also features the Saab Active Head Restraint (SAHR) system as standard equipment. This world-first safety feature effectively limits the front seat occupants’ head movement during a rear-end collision, reducing the risk of whiplash injury.

    OnStar Technology Provides Additional Safety
For 2001, Saab will provide the next generation OnStar and 12 months of premium service as standard equipment on all of its vehicles. This telematics system uses wireless technology and state-of-the-art voice recognition and text-to-speech technology to provide hands-free safety, security and concierge services. OnStar uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite technology and wireless communication to link the driver and vehicle to the 24-hour OnStar Center, where advisors provide real-time, personalized help. Current OnStar safety and security services include automatic air bag notification, stolen vehicle tracking, emergency services, and roadside assistance with location and route support. For 2001, these services expand to include voice-activated, hands-free personal calling, in addition to hands-free Internet connectivity for access to e-mail and information like stock quotes and personalized news and sports.

    4-Stars in EuroNCAP collision test
The Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5 were both awarded four stars in the latest European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) collision test, which evaluates European model variants. Both Saab models were also awarded the highest possible score in the EuroNCAP new side collision test. According to the EuroNCAP, the Saab 9-5 ”remains the safest (car) that EuroNCAP has yet tested” (www.euroncap.com). Saab is pleased with these results, but will continue its emphasis on the real-life safety of its cars.

    SAAB FOR 2001: 9-5 WAGON — DESIGN

SAAB 9-5 WAGON DESIGN PROVIDES FUNCTIONAL, DYNAMIC APPEAL

    • Aerodynamics, visual appeal led exterior design
    • Exterior design nets high speed stability and low wind noise
    • Flexible cargo capacity with sliding load floor
    • CargoTracks™ provide unique, secure cargo loading system
    • Ultimate seat comfort: warm in winter, cool in summer
    • Versatile interior design offers additional storage, flexibility

There are many products engineered to be versatile and functional, but few that are simultaneously valued for their distinctive design. The Swiss Army KnifeTM is one rare example — the Saab 9-5 Wagon is another. Featuring a wide range of features and options that provide a level of versatility once thought only available in an SUV, the Saab 9-5 Wagon proves form and function can go hand-in-hand.

Unlike many wagon versions of cars, the Saab 9-5 Wagon is not just an add-on design. Even though it shares many components with the Saab 9-5 Sedan, the Saab 9-5 Wagon was planned, conceived and styled separately as a wagon from the very beginning. It features a roof and rear doors that are different from the sedan model.

This relative clean-sheet approach is why the design works as a whole. There are no awkward shapes or strange add-on solutions. The car offers everything that a Wagon in the segment needs — delivered in a Saab package.

Aerodynamics and Visual Appeal Led Exterior Design
With a drag coefficient of only 0.31, the Saab 9-5 Wagon places itself among the very best in the premium wagon segment.

The sleek aerodynamic properties of the Saab 9-5 Wagon are immediately apparent when looking at the design of the rear of the car. Much effort has been put into designing a car that will pass through the air with as little friction as possible. Most of the attention was concentrated on the rear edge of the roof, because the airflow at the rear has a great effect on both drag and lift forces.

After numerous experiments and testing in wind tunnels and on high-speed test tracks, Saab engineers found that a small “lip” would provide a distinct separation of the airflow at the rear roof edge. This design reduced drag without adding any lift forces.

High Speed Stability and Low Wind Noise
A great deal of effort was also put into perfecting the curvature around the corners of the car, especially around the D-pillars. The Saab 9-5 Wagon’s design is very successful at providing the car with a clear separation of airflow around the sides, adding to the stability of the car at high speed. Both the aerodynamics and high-speed characteristics have gone through extensive and extremely successful testing in wind tunnels and at the Nardo high-speed test track in Italy.
The 9-5 Wagon’s sleek aerodynamics have also greatly reduced wind noise to such low levels that Saab engineers had to find the quietest wind tunnels to even get a reading, because operational background noises were too high. The end result is a high performance, sleek and dynamic wagon that is also one of the roomiest and most functional in its class.

    Flexible Cargo Capacity
Saab’s designers also placed high concentration on the vehicle’s interior design. For starters, the 9-5 Wagon's cargo loading area is flexible and adaptable. For normal loading, with the rear seat up, the 9-5 Wagon offers a robust cargo capacity of 37 cubic feet. The floor is flat, without awkward corners to limit space. For an increased cargo area, both sides of the split fold-down rear seat can be quickly folded or removed entirely. With the rear seat fully folded, the 9-5 Wagon provides a generous 73 cubic feet of space.

Loading cargo is easy thanks to the low loading height and optional sturdy sliding floor that can be rolled out nearly 20 inches. This optional load floor, when fully extended, can support up to 440 pounds, making it possible for two adults to sit comfortably on it or use it as a table for a picnic or tailgate party.

The loading area is equipped with a replaceable extended rubbing strip on the upper surface of the rear bumper to minimize the risk of scratching the paint when loading and unloading the car. Additionally, the tailgate requires little lifting effort and opens high enough for an average adult to stand beneath it. For loading and unloading at night, the tailgate will illuminate the cargo area inside the car, as well as the surrounding loading area.

The cargo area also features a standard rigid, foldable parcel shelf that fully covers the cargo. It provides additional loading flexibility by allowing the driver to store items on top of it. The thick shelf also helps insulate the passenger compartment from road noise. For additional cargo carrying flexibility and versatility, a number of cargo handling accessories such as straps, elastic nets, cargo guards and a complete roof rack system are available for the car.

    CargoTracksTM
The Saab 9-5 Wagon features an innovation from the aircraft industry called CargoTracksTM. This unique, standard mounting system forms the basis for safe and versatile loading in the Saab 9-5 Wagon. CargoTracksTM are a pair of special aluminum rails embedded into the floor of the cargo area. They utilize adjustable one-grip locks and load securing belts to make sure that cargo doesn’t shift under emergency braking or during an accident. Load straps and an elastic loading net that fit the one-grip locks are available as accessories. When the CargoTracksTM aren’t used, specially designed covers keep them clean and ready for their next use.
