Post 2003/4 oil system upgrade
Hello, this is my 4th Saab (previously had 900 classic, 9000, 95). I have a question but not sure where to post it. How can I tell if my car has the post 2003/4 oil system upgrade ? It is registered 2005 but it may have been in a showroom for a year or so. Can the engine number be used or is there a simpler way to tell ?

Thread moved to the 9-5 workshop forum.
You can check the model year using the VIN: http://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=27623
To check if your 9-5 has the latest crankcase ventilation kit, this thread has more information: http://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=732

If your car was registered in 2005, you have very high odds you already have the most important part of the PCV updated system installed from the factory (eg your oil trap will be mated into the back of the engine block with a breather connection allowing better ventilation). this was implemented by saab from late 2003 manufacturing onwards (so 2004 and 2005 models should be safe), so even if the car was delivered to the dealer in mid 2004 you should be fine.
checking your vin number details will provide you the exact manufacturing year/month, so check that first. once you find out your engine number, the parts catalogue will tell you exactly what parts are used and fitted (including PCV system details )
once you have confirmed your car was manufactured after late 2003, there is an easy way to check if you have the final PCV system modifications already installed (eg the main updated PCV system would have been done at the factory, you dont need to modify anything else)
with that improved oil trap design, you might need one small (non urgent) modification, depending on the exact month of manufacturing. (i had to do this final small modification on my 2004 model) . to determine this, look at the back of the engine (near the firewall) where the oil trap is located 3 oil trap hoses snake up from the oil trap to insert into several engine locations, one goes towards the throttle body, another goes to the valve cover where it inserts into , and the 3e hose goes forwards to the front of the car towards the cobra pipe( on top of the turbo charger at the front of the engine), the longest of these 3 PCV hoses (which goes to the cobra) should have a small plastic one way valve in it (about halfway along the length of that hose, approx at position where this hose has a little clamp attaching it next to the valve cover (as it snakes forwards towards the cobra pipe area), eg that little valve is located approx above the water pump area next to the valve cover)
this is the PCV hose used in that final modification (used in all 2006 - 2009 models) https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/932...-Hose-5961610/
note: this hose can only be used on oil traps model used in 2006 onward cars (but that same 2006-2009 oil trap can also be retro fitted on 2004 and 2005 model 95's)
this is the 2006-2009 oil trap model used for it : https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/603...Trap-21345243/
(note that their parts catalogue lists it as 2004 onwards, because it will fit on cars from 2004-2009 (because it mates to the engine block and can be fitted with the correct 3 major PCV hoses). but the cars manufactured in 2004 and 2005 will originally come from the factory with a slightly different oil trap, and that model oil trap wont work/fit with that final PCV modified hose with the little valve)
this is the slightly different oil trap used on some 2004-2005 cars (your car engine number in the EPC will tell you exactly up to what engine number manufactured uses this version) https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/161...-Trap-9549213/
if your car does not have that final modification PCV hose with the little valve, dont stress out, its a small minor final modification implemented from 2005 onwards the most import engine design improvement to resolve the dreaded oil sludge problem (present in many european cars from late 1990's to mid 2000's) was to have the oil trap mated into the engine block with a directly connected "breather connection" (earlier oil traps pre-2003 were attached to the back of the engine, but only had a small hose at the bottom of the oil trap leading to the engine sump area, but had NO breather connection directly into the engine block)
also dont get confused by the information in the thread nordwulf listed ( http://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=732 ), because it mainly contains useful information on the final "version 6" PCV system upgrade for 1998-2003 models (highly unlikely to be needed for your car if it was manufactured from late 2003 onwards). the WIS technical instructions of how to update older PCV systems (as they illustrate in detail in that nordwulf thread) should NOT be needed for you, it would be a major backward step to try and do so (and wont be compatible because the oil trap does not mate with the engine block for ex ).
if your car does not hove that little one way valve on that PCV hose to the cobra pipe, and you want to replace that hose to have the final minor modification (i did this) then be aware that you probably also need to replace the oil trap itself (the 2004-2005 oil trap is SLIGHTLY different from the 2006-2009 oil traps, because the connection of that long PCV hose onto the oil trap has a differently shaped connection). replacing the oil trap on 9-5 saab's is a major pain (hard to get enough space at the back of the engine between the firewall to remove and replace it)
long explanation , but if your car is a 2005 model (or even 2004 manufactured) you will have that important oil trap modification system installed at the factory , and you have a 50/50 chance this last PCV hose (and its appropriate oil trap model) is already installed. IF not installed, check if there are any signs of PCV "stress" (multiple small oil leaks at different engine locations) or oil sludge (unlikely unless the car was mainly driven at low speeds in a city with lots of starts/stops). Dropping the sump to inspect the oil pickup grid would be the only certain way to determine this, btw, saab recommends in its service bulletins to replace PCV hoses at 100.000 km maintenance because the rubber type hoses (instead of solid plastic types) can decay internally over the years and contribute (in a small way) to oil degradation, so if this was never done on your 2005 model, you might want to deal with this at some point (and then install a 2006-2009 oil trap with the correct final hose modification for ex)Last edited by silver2u; 19 August 2020 at 13:25.

Alternatively you could go to this https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/Saab site and look up your VIN which will tell you the year of manufacture.
