One more question. I overfilled just a tat above the top line of the stick. is that a problem? And how would one remove it if needed?

You can loosen the drain plug just a bit and let some fluid drain out. But if it is just a tat, it probably doesn't matter.

Thanks for the terrific writeup! I've followed your directions completely so far. Although, I'm having a difficult time tracking down a replacement washer for the ATF pan. Where did you obtain yours?

Tip for anybody having a hard time finding them washers, Volvo seems to have them too. failing that take a 800 grade sandpaper and sand a wee bit of till flat again.

In case anybody wants to repeat this.

I managed to get it out over the dipstick hole. Took a 5MM piece of transparent tubing (I did not want to take a larger diameter as I was worried I would not get in past the bends). Transparent so I can see what happens. Made the end I wanted to insert tapered. Put a piece of tape on the tubing to indicated the same length of the dipstick (so I know how deep I am in). Took a strong plastic transparent bottle (any soda bottle would do). Drilled a 4.5MM hole near the top, where the plastic is thick. Put the other hose end in and sealed it with some putty (probably overkill, but there you go). Used one of those devices that they sell for closing your wine bottles after you took a small amount out, with a rubber cork and a plastic vacuum device. The cork just fits in the Soda bottle and you might need to use some downward pressure as you pump to get a good vacuum.

After a run with the oil warm (it is less thick) I stuck the tubing in (engine not running as you do not want the gears to eat your tubing), I stuck the tubing in. There is a moment of resistance at the point where you tape is about 2 inches from the edge. A bit of fiddling up and down will get you past it. I went about an inch past the tape to be sure I am in the oil.

Now start pulling vacuum on the bottle and slowly oil will come up and dribble into the bottle. The bottle will collapse a bit but mine did a good job in bringing up the excess oil. Keep the vacuum constant and it works, not fast but it works.

I disposed of the oil (not sure if the process contaminated it) in the usual responsible way at the recycling place in the next town.

Question as to the oil level.


I can not get a consistent reading of the level. I followed different instruction I found on forums for Saab.

And neither one gives me a reading that is consistent. Now I admit I can not measure if the engine is exactly at the right temperature, but I figured a longer ride will do this.


Any tips? Anybody else with the same experience?
