What year did the trunk (boot) lid have sound modifications? Can it be retrofitted?
My 2005 9-3 has an aluminum trunk lid (aluminium boot lid) that has a higher pitch, metallic sound when it is closed. The 2011 9-3 has a deep tone, solid "thump" when closing.
Years ago, such as in the 1970's, American cars had a higher pitch sound when closing the door. Car makers found that a low pitched "thump" may drivers think their cars were more solid and better built. It is now a science to engineer cars so that they sound solid. Likewise, engine compartments have lots of black plastic covers to make it look like the engine is just a box, not a lot of wires or hoses.
I think that sometime in the 2006-2011 model year, the trunk was modified.
1. What was done? Added insulation to the trunk lid? If so, can this be retro-fitted?
2. When was it done?

probably the hinges are misaligned and rubs the springs on the way to open&close with something.
My trunk also is aluminium and perfect close without noise.
I have no idea about modifications since 2005 up to now.
