What summer tire to buy?
In 3-4 months, I'll put on my summer Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric (235/45R17 97Y) tires for the final year. What should I get after that?
Priorities:
1. Overall performance in wet, dry, and cool weather (50F, 10C).
Some other areas are of less importance. Cost must be under $250 per tire, preferably around 150. Treadwear should be at least 100, which is very lax. No need for the tire to function in winter weather.
Currently, my order of preference is roughly:
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
Continental ExtremeContact DW (+cheaper, -lower load rating of 94)
Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (-not available in the US yet)
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z01 Star Spec (-possibly poorer wet weather traction)
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 (-probably poorer wet weather traction)
maybe something from Yokohama
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (-old design)
Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT (-looks like Goodyear but only 94 load rating, Dunlop is a Goodyear joint venture)
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup (-only comes in 225 width, very impractical for daily use, more for track use)

When I bought my car it had Pirellis and fortunately they wore out fast
So I replaced them with Avon ZZ3 ZZ3 | Avon Tyres
I've used these on both my 9-3s and wouldn't try anything else.
Avon is owned by Cooper so I suppose in the US the equivalent is
Cooper Tires - Cooper Zeon 2XS - performance tires
The Cooper Zeon 2XS is a premium high performance summer tire. The W- and Y-speed-rated 2XS is designed to provide excellent cornering ability and steering response along with optimum wet and dry traction and high-speed capability. As a summer tire, the Cooper Zeon 2XS is not intended to be driven in snow or ice.

At $110 each it's an excellent tire.Cheers from a little town 3 hours Saabing south west of Huy

I replaced the OEM Continentals on my 9-3SC with BF Goodrich g-Force Sport.
After 1 season I'm very happy with them, I used them until Thanksgiving before switching to my winters,

BFGoodrich KDW2 the best summer tire out there, the 2nd version is apparently less noisier then the first!

I have the Conti DW's and those things grip extremely well. Phenomenal in the rain too.

In some recent Nordic tests, Continental PremiumContact2 was a clear winner. It was scoring well in all categories.

Dave, if you are looking for a tire good to 10C, I wouldn't look at a summer tire, but rather a performance "all-season".
The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+ is my choice (have a set on the car right now).
Ride is fantastic, very quiet and very grippy!
Quite fankly, unless you are doing a lot of track work, I would be hard pressed to see how there would be any benefit to a pure summer tire ... other than having new rubber on the car more frequently due to the summers wearing out faster.
I actually had mine on the track last year and they were great ... no issues with grip under pressure.
My second choice would be the Conti DWS, for the same reasons listed above (can't speak to how quiet or grippy they are though).President, The Saab Club of Canada
